Energy retailer Momentum Energy Pty Limited (Momentum Energy) has paid penalties totalling $764,380 for allegedly breaching family violence obligations.
We issued 20 penalty notices to Momentum Energy after it allegedly:
- disclosed or provided access to confidential information of three family violence affected customers without their consent, in 33 instances
- after a victim-survivor disclosed that they were affected by family violence in May 2022, failed to take reasonable steps to identify a safe method of communication and elicit the customer's preferred method of communication
The alleged disclosures took place between May 2022 and January 2025.
The Energy Retail Code of Practice prohibits energy retailers from disclosing or providing confidential information about family violence affected customers to any other person without their consent.
Family violence obligations were introduced to give customers affected by family violence an entitlement to safe, supportive and flexible assistance from a retailer when managing their personal and financial information.
