How we regulate
We use a formal process to exercise our responsibilities under the Essential Services Commission Act 2001.
These responsibilities include:
- developing reports on how markets operate
- making price determinations
- taking compliance and enforcement actions
- producing compliance assessments and audits
- approving new market entrants.
We produce an annual work program that outlines our key focuses for the year.
In line with our Stakeholder engagement framework and charter of consultation, and submissions policy, we consult with stakeholders through workshops, public forums and formal submission processes to inform our decision-making. We consider many factors in our decisions, including the effect on consumers experiencing vulnerability.
Featured work
Our Getting to Fair: Advancing Equity draft strategy is open for consultation. The strategy is the commission’s draft plan to address individual and systems-level inequity to improve consumer outcomes, with a continued focus on consumers experiencing vulnerability.
