ZEN Energy Retail Pty Ltd customer transfer following retail market suspension
07 July 2026
The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has initiated the retailer of last resort process to allow for the transfer of Victorian customers from failed electricity retailer ZEN Energy Retail Pty Ltd (ACN 615 751 052) to other retailers to provide for the continued supply and sale of essential electricity services.
In Victoria ZEN Energy Retail serves commercial and industrial, and small business customers only. It does not serve any residential consumers.
The AER is responsible for retailer of last resort arrangements in Victoria under the National Energy Retail Law (Victoria) Act 2024, to ensure customers continue to receive electricity supply when a retailer fails.
What this means for ZEN Energy Retail customers
Affected customers of ZEN Energy Retail will be allocated to designated retailers of last resort. These are either AGL, Origin Energy or EnergyAustralia depending on a customer’s location.
Customers will be contacted directly by AGL, Origin Energy or EnergyAustralia with information about the new arrangements including options for ongoing supply and who to contact for more information. Customers can change this arrangement at any time by choosing a new retailer that services their area, or entering a new contract with AGL, Origin Energy or EnergyAustralia.
Customers requiring life support equipment are advised to confirm their requirements with their new retailer as soon as possible.
Please refer to the AER’s website for further information about the retailer of last resort process for ZEN Energy Retail customers.
Zen Energy Retail application for an electricity retail licence transfer
On 2 June 2026, ZEN Energy Retail applied to transfer its electricity retail licence to ZEN Energy Retail Holdings Pty Ltd (ACN 697 773 916). Consultation on the licence application closed on 17 June 2026.
No decision was made about the transfer application before the retailer of last resort event and subsequent revocation of licence. This means the proposed licence transfer application will not proceed.
