Simplified licence conditions for electricity generators
15 June 2026
The Essential Services Commission is making it easier for licensed electricity generators to understand and meet their obligations by removing unnecessary and outdated licence conditions.
Anyone who holds a licence to generate electricity in Victoria will now operate under a single set of standard licence conditions, instead of multiple individual conditions set out across existing licences. This will reduce the time and effort needed to apply for and manage a licence.
The decision has been informed by consultation with generation licensees, including feedback on proposed variations to licence conditions.
This builds on the commission’s work to simplify regulation and compliance:
removing three outdated codes of practice
faster processing of licence applications
aligning rules with other states
issuing clearer guidance to help businesses comply with the law.
