Glen Eira City Council’s request for higher rate cap approved
18 May 2026
Following a request from Glen Eira City Council, the Essential Services Commission has approved a 5 per cent rate cap for the 2026-27 financial year, 2.25 percentage points above the 2.75 per cent cap set by the Minister for Local Government.
Our decision was guided by the legislative criteria and the objectives of the Fair Go Rates system. We considered whether the proposal promotes the long-term interests of ratepayers and supports the council’s capacity to deliver services and infrastructure.
Glen Eira’s application showed it needs additional revenue to improve its long-term financial stability, and so it can continue providing necessary community services.
Glen Eira’s application also showed it has:
taken other steps to improve its financial position
taken measures to identify efficiencies and service improvements
considered other ways of generating revenue
engaged with its community on priorities and whether a higher cap is appropriate.
