Under the Transport (Compliance and Miscellaneous) Act 1983, taxi fares are regulated in the Melbourne metropolitan taxi zone (the metropolitan zone) and the urban and large regional taxi zone (the urban zone).
The Essential Services Commission is responsible for determining the maximum taxi fares in the metropolitan and urban zones. The Commission’s fare determination sets out the maximum charges for taxi services in these zones.
The Commission is required to review its maximum taxi fare determinations within two years of their making. The next review is due by 19 June 2016.
