Welcome to Water

From 1 January 2004 the Essential Services Commission became the economic regulator of the Victorian water sector. The sector is comprised of 20 water businesses providing water and wastewater services to all of Victoria's urban and rural irrigation customers.

Our role involves approving prices and service standards. As part of this role we undertake periodic reviews of water businesses’ proposed prices, approve their service standards and develop codes and guidelines that the businesses need to comply with.

Prior to 1 January 2004, our role was limited to monitoring and enforcing service standard obligations for the three metropolitan retail water authorities (City West Water, South East Water and Yarra Valley Water).
