On 14 May 2013, the Commission received a referral from the Minister for Public Transport to conduct a review and provide a report within 9 weeks recommending a fixed fare, per head pricing structure for the proposed late night, share-ride taxi pilot program in Geelong.
The objective of the pilot service is to both grow the Geelong taxi market and to maximise taxi occupancy by providing an incentive for passengers to share a high occupancy taxi with others travelling in the same general direction. The scheme will operate from the Safe Rank on Moorabool Street Geelong on Sunday mornings from 1 am to 6 am.
In the nine weeks provided for the review, the Commission developed its recommendations and report, and also undertook a public consultation process. An issues paper inviting public submissions was also released.
On 4 July, the Commission provided its report to the Minister for Public Transport. As required under the Transport (Compliance and Miscellaneous) Act 1983, the Commission publicly released the report on its website in August 2013.
