New renewable energy power stations (i.e. constructed after 1 January 2007) and any pre-existing power stations that invest in additional renewable energy generating capacity after 1 January 2007 can participate in the VRET scheme. To participate in the VRET scheme, power stations must be located in the state of Victoria and the energy generated must be used in Victoria. Power stations, once accredited by the Commission, are eligible to create VRECs for their eligible generation output. Registered VRECs can be traded independently of the physical electricity to third parties and will provide a second revenue stream for accredited power stations. To become an accredited renewable energy power station in the VRET scheme, the power station must: be located in Victoria. Interstate generators may be allowed to participate in the VRET scheme in the future if their jurisdiction implements a scheme approved under section 5 of the Victorian Renewable Energy Act 2006 (the Act); use one or more of the eligible renewable energy sources as defined in the Act to generate electricity; have obtained, and comply with the provisions of, all relevant environmental and other approvals for the operation of a power station; be able to measure the amount of electricity being generated; and supply the generated electricity to directly meet demand for electrical energy. » Applying for accreditation » Accreditation fees » Scheme capacity » Eligible fuel source » Power station registers » Annual electricity generation returns» Power stations - frequently asked questions Back to top
